Album Review: Nina Nesbitt – Peroxide

Album Review: Nina Nesbitt – Peroxide

19 year old Nina quickly built up a live reputation by proving a hit at last summer’s festivals. That same stage confidence shows on this, her debut album. Peroxide delivers an assured, street savvy take on folk but is a bit too over produced and lacking the energy of her shows. The lyrics encapsulate her times with lots of maturity and subtle wit.  Lead single ‘Selfies’ mocks ironically “I’ll post it up in black and white / with a depressing quote on my life”. But there are tender moments too including  ‘The Hardest Part’  and its “I’d give anything just to be with you again but it’s not the right time” refrain. For the most part its exactly what you would expect –  catchy pop with the occasional soft rock ballad (Kodaline make an appearance on Hold You) but it’s the conviction that sells it most.  The pounding  ’18 Candles’ even recalls early KT Tunstall. A bright future beckons – so bright it won’t even need bleaching. 6/10
